Steep driveway repair
On a steep drive, water picks up speed and carries the gravel to the bottom with every hard rain. We fix the water first, then build the drive back so it holds the grade.

What you're probably dealing with
- A driveway so steep your car spins or slides on the loose stone
- Gravel that washes to the bottom every storm
- Ruts cut down the middle that get deeper every season
- Water running down the drive instead of off it
- Not sure whether you need pavement, more gravel or a full rebuild
How we fix it
- Walk the grade with you, top to bottom, and find where the water comes from
- Turn the water off the driving surface with ditches, armored rock or cross-drains where they're needed
- Crown the drive so water sheds to the sides, not down the middle
- Use angular stone that locks together, not rounded rock that rolls downhill
- Compact it in layers with our vibratory roller so it holds the grade

“I couldn't be happier with the way my driveway turned out! … Any rainwater from the top of the hill now drains in the ditches instead of the middle of the driveway which was the problem. I now have a smooth drive all the way up my hill.”

Common questions about steep driveways
Can a steep driveway stay gravel?
Usually, yes, once the water is handled. The slope itself isn't the problem; it's what the water does to the gravel on the slope. Get the water off the drive, use stone that locks together and compact it, and a steep gravel drive can hold up.
Should I just pave it?
Sometimes paving makes sense on a short, very steep stretch. For most rural drives here, a gravel driveway that's drained, crowned and compacted is the practical answer. We'll tell you honestly which way we'd go on your drive.
Why does my gravel keep washing to the bottom?
Because water is running down the drive instead of off it, and rounded stone rolls. Fix the water's path and use angular stone, and the gravel stays where it belongs.
What does steep driveway work cost?
It depends on the length, the slope, access and how much drainage work is needed, and a steep drive usually takes more work than a flat one. Our pricing page explains what sets the price. The only way to get a real number is for us to see your drive.
